What do Fresh Produce, the Internet, and Government Benefits Have in Common? The are All Part of the New Services Offered by the Community Programs Office
The Free Farmer's Market is on the move delivering fresh food and cheer to over 75 residents of Miller's River Apartments, a low income housing facility for seniors and disabled individuals. Last week East End House volunteers, staff, and local entertainers transformed the community room with festive touches. A barbershop quartet serenaded the crowd as they picked up fresh produce, bread, and canned goods. The Free Farmer's Market serves approximately 120, often isolated seniors and disabled individuals, each month at Miller's River and Roosevelt Towers housing complexes. Guests bring home nutritious groceries and have the chance to socialize with neighbors. Volunteers hand out fresh produce.
Have you ever wanted to get on the internet, but are not sure how to get started? East End House can help! Beginning computer classes for seniors start next week and are held Friday mornings from 10:30 to noon. You will learn the basics, like how to get on and use the internet, write email, and what all the icons on the screen can do. The class is open to all seniors. For more information, call Emily at 617-876-4444 or drop by the Community Programs Office.
Do you think you may be eligible for government benefits? East End House can help you find out. The Community Programs Office now offers Benefit Eligibility Screenings. Screenings are available for a number of benefits including, MassHealth, Food Stamps, Fuel Assistance, and many more. East End House Supporters and Staff Took the Plunge for Your Community
President & CEO, Michael Delia with Bella, Lauren Thompson, City Councilman Craig Kelley, Jon Megas-Russell, Director of Community Programs, Emily Bullen, Asst. Child Care Director, Dan Rudolph, and Director of Special Projects, Rebecca Gallo after the plunge.
A team of eleven supporters and staff from East End House, including a 10 year old girl who attends our afterschool program, raced into the Atlantic last month to raise money for a good cause. What could be so important that it sent us running with abandon into the icy water in February? Ensuring school-age kids have a fabulous summer, safe and learning, and pre-schoolers grow and develop in a fun and nurturing environment. The Polar Plunge was sponsored by the New England Network for Children and Families and 25% of all pledges went to support their work with youth in the community, while the additional 75% of pledges raised by Team East End House will be used to fund scholarships for kids from low income families to attend Summer Camp and Child Care Programs at East End House. Thank you to all our brave plungers who made it a fantastic day! And thank you to all who pledged Team East End House! You all truly made a difference in the life of a child.

What's the Difference? That's the Question Youth from Your Community are Asking
What's the Difference? is a magazine created by teens in Youth Corps, a group of 15-17 year olds who come together once a week to engage in service learning projects, improve job skills, and work to improve our community. The project is in collaboration with East End House and the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce with funding from Citizen's Bank. The magazine hits on issues for teens, like tips on dressing for work and how to create a stellar resume. It also speaks to business leaders with ways to get involved with youth in the community. The cover story looks at common stereotypes and explores the importance of looking beyond appearance when finding a good match between a teen and a business.
You can be part of this powerful partnership between teens and businesses. Join us for the launch of What's the Difference? on Tuesday, March 11th from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Cambridge Innovation Center, One Broadway, 5th Floor. Find out how you can get involved by employing a teen this summer, volunteering your time to help teens with job skills, mock interviews, and resume development, and many more ways you can make a difference in your community. You can register for this free event by contacting the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce at 617-876-4100 or visiting their website at www.cambridgechamber.org.
